Trump’s speech at the Boy Scouts’ national jamboree was so bad, parents began to pull their sons out of the organization. During the speech, he attacked Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, dissenting Republicans, and the news media. For his entirely inappropriate speech, Trump refuses to apologize, according to Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
But even though Trump isn’t apologizing, the Boy Scouts of America are. In a statement released on Thursday, Michael Surbaugh, the organization’s chief executive, offered his “sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree.”
He went on to say that “we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.”
Sanders and Trump don’t agree. “I was at that event and I saw nothing but roughly 40,000 to 45,000 Boy Scouts cheering the president on throughout his remarks,” Sanders said. “I think they were pretty excited that he was there and happy to hear him speak to them.”
Trump treated the jamboree like one of his own rallies. In fact, he might not have even realized he was at an organized event for the Boy Scouts. He claimed it was their largest gathering, as if they weren’t already going to be there, and then credited the Scouts for helping him win the election, even though they aren’t old enough to vote.
As Surbaugh notes in his apology, they have been inviting the president to the jamboree since 1937, and eight out of eleven presidents have spoken at the event. Trump might be the first president not invited back.
