Adding his voice to the growing number of people outraged over President Trump’s comments during the Boy Scout Jamboree this week, veteran news anchor Dan Rather expressed dismay and disappointment in the “disgusting” speech that Trump gave.
Rather noted that many may in fact have supported what the president had to say. “No doubt many in the crowd were riled up by Mr. Trump’s stale rhetoric of ‘fake news’ and lies about his ‘massive’ electoral victory,” he said. “But the Boy Scouts is a diverse organization with chapters in every corner of this nation. And today, many are no doubt wondering whether they belong in a group that is supposed to be built on community and service.”
Rather added to his commentary boy making reference to the Boy Scout Law:
Scouts learn the importance of being “trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.” How few of those adjectives apply to our current Commander in Chief.
“A man who can’t control himself to act in a manner befitting the setting, is a man without the steadiness of character to run a nation,” Rather added, pointing out that the president made several political comments that were out of place for the Boy Scout Jamboree. “A grown man who is so insecure as to seek affirmation in a group of teenagers is not a man with the maturity to lead a nation.”
Rather concluded his Facebook commentary by suggesting that the president is destroying the very fabric of what makes our nation great. “Bluntly put – and there is no joy and having to say this – he is tearing apart the norms of our nation,” Rather concluded.
Trump attended the Boy Scout Jamboree on Monday, where he discussed “fake news” and the War on Christmas. He also cajoled Scouts in attendance to look down upon President Barack Obama, encouraging them to boo him for never attending a Jamboree in person. Obama did send a video message to the Scouts in 2010, and was a Scout himself as a child. Donald Trump never was a Scout himself.
