Donald Trump built his campaign on the promise of “bringing jobs back to America” and deporting illegal immigrants “stealing” American jobs. He also wants to limit the H1B visas that many tech firms use, such as Google, Microsoft, and Apple, which allows them to bring in programmers.
But there’s one visa Trump is supporting—H-2B. The Department of Homeland Security announced that companies “will be able to hire up to 15,000 additional temporary nonagricultural workers under the H-2B program under a final rule that the Departments of Homeland Security and Labor submitted to the Federal Register.”
And who happens to hire workers under this Visa? Trump, of course. The New Yorker reported that his Florida property, Mar-a-Lago, “has taken advantage of the H-2B program” over the last decade to hire dishwashers, cooks, cleaners, and gardeners. Many of the workers in Trump’s hotels and other businesses are there under an H-2B visa.
Trump claimed he had no choice but to hire foreign labor because of a worker shortage. “Getting help in Palm Beach during the season is almost impossible,” he claimed. As a UT economics professor told the New Yorker, “The idea that there’s a worker shortage means the firm isn’t raising wages.”
Trump declared this week to be “Made in America Week,” and promised that “The well-being of the American citizen and worker will be placed second to none.” He might want to amend that to “second Mar-A-Lago.”
