Trump is known for his pettiness, but the extent of his malice towards others when he doesn’t get his way goes a lot further than most people realize. Trump is so vengeful that he cut health coverage for a sick infant. Not just any sick infant—his own relative.
When Trump’s father, Fred Sr., died in 1999, his will left most of his money to Donald and his siblings, but not much for the family of Fred Jr. (called Freddy), who died before Fred Sr. wrote his will, according to David Cay Johnston in his book The Making of Donald Trump. Freddy’s children sued because the will “had been ‘procured by fraud and undue influence’ by Donald and the other surviving siblings.”
Even after Freddy’s death, his family continued to receive health insurance through Fred Sr.’s company. The coverage was critical for Freddy’s grandson—Donald’s grandnephew—who suffered from seizures and later developed cerebral palsy. After Fred Sr. had died, one of his lawyers sent a letter to the insurer that declaring that “all costs” for the sick child will be covered, regardless of caps or medical necessity.
But a week after Freddy’s family filed the lawsuit, Trump discontinued their health insurance, including the child’s. Trump actually bragged about this to the New York Daily News:
“Why should we give him medical coverage? They sued my father, essentially. I’m not thrilled when someone sues my father.”
When asked if taking coverage from an ailing child was cold, Trump replied, “I can’t help that.” He also claims that his father didn’t like Freddy’s Ex-Wife. If that’s true or not, it doesn’t matter since Fred Trump Sr. expressed his wishes that the family’s health insurance would be covered.
They eventually settled out of court, but because the settlement is sealed, it’s unclear what happened to Freddy’s grandson. What we do know is that President Trump is willing to jeopardize the life of a sick infant in his own family just to get his way.
