English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the University of Cambridge, Stephen Hawking, issued grave warnings about the path that President Trump is taking the United States down in regards to fighting climate change.
Stephen Hawking spoke to BBC News about climate change and President Trump this past weekend, and offered an explanation as to why he is issuing his warnings. “We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump’s action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulfuric acid,” Hawking said.
Those conditions would certainly lead to an end of life on Earth as we know. It’s quite disturbing that he thinks Trump himself will be responsible for irreversible climate change, though Hawking did not provide a timeline.
Hawking said that by pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, Trump is causing “avoidable environmental damage to our beautiful planet, endangering the natural world, for us and for our children.” Even if you do not subscribe to the global warming, end of the world theory, it certainly is true that the beauty of the planet is being damaged by our use of fossil fuels.
Hawking then seemed to offer the hypothesis that our desecration of the planet is based on pure human instinct, implying that there is little we can do and that we must colonize space. “I fear evolution has inbuilt greed and aggression to the human genome. There is no sign of conflict lessening, and the development of militarized technology and weapons of mass destruction could make that disastrous. The best hope for the survival of the human race might be independent colonies in space,” Hawking said.
I generally caution subscription to doomsday predictions like these. Let us not forget folks, that minus the obviously horrible things still happening in the world, today is probably the best time to be alive, when compared to our specie’s history. World human population is at record highs, while overall human aggression is down. This is one of the safest times to be alive, as far as recorded history is concerned. And if you avoid what are mostly obviously dangerous places in the United States, it still is the safest place with the highest achievable standard of living on the planet.
