On Tuesday, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) was caught on a hot mic detailing her concerns about Trump’s mental health and whether or not he even understands the budget process.
While talking to Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), Collins said that in Trump’s budget proposal, “whenever there was a grant, they just X-ed it out, with no metric, no thinking about it, no nothing. I mean it’s just incredibly irresponsible.” These grants included welfare and social service support initiatives.
When Reed responded by saying “He’s crazy,” Collins whispered, “I’m worried.”
Reed, the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is concerned about the failure to come up with a spending deal. “If we don’t get a budget deal, we’re going to be paralyzed with [Department of Defense].”
If there is no spending deal in place, the defense budget would be cut off at $549 Billion for the next fiscal year due to the Budget Control Act (BCA), which is imposing spending ceilings on all agencies. However, that ceiling is more than $70 billion less than what the House Budget Committee already improved.
“I don’t even think he knows that there is a BCA,” Collins said.
