Donald Trump Has Nice Words For DACA Recipients, His Base Lashes Out
No one should have been surprised that some supporters of Republican Donald Trump were not the most tolerant of people different from themselves. Considering the way he started his presidential campaign by insulting people south of the border with outright lies, the support is expected.
But what happens when he makes even the slightest suggestion that not all people born outside the United States are “bad hombres”? That xenophobic portion of his base loses it.
That’s exactly what happened today when Trump Tweeted out a message seemingly supporting DACA recipients. He stated in two Tweets:
Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military? Really! They have been in our country for many years through no fault of their own – brought in by parents at young age. Plus BIG border security
The reaction from some normally opposing Donald Trump was mostly of shock at the apparent turn. The reaction from his supporters was, well…not great.
Not surprisingly, some didn’t quite understand the details of DACA and made some debunked claims.
ut, as the government’s page on DACA clearly states, “Deferred action does not provide lawful status.” In other words, there is no path to citizenship.
The government also made clear any significant criminal record would block someone from receiving DACA status:
You will not be considered for DACA if you have been convicted of:
A felony offense;
A significant misdemeanor offense; or
Three or more other misdemeanor offenses not occurring on the same date and not arising out of the same act, omission, or scheme of misconduct.
You are otherwise deemed to pose a threat to national security or public safety.
But facts tend to get in the way of terrible arguments so they obvious get ignored here.
As for others who say they supported Donald Trump, the feeling of betrayal by calling people “good” or “educated” is palpable.
